Dock repair in Daytona Beach and coastal Volusia County

Most dock repairs are smaller than people fear: a run of deck boards, some hardware, a piling or two. Angi's 2026 national average is about $3,355, with most jobs between $896 and $5,881. The question to answer early is whether the pilings are sound, because they decide between a repair and a rebuild.

What usually wears out on a dock?
- Deck boards: Soft, cracked or loose boards. Angi says deck boards usually need replacing every 5 to 10 years.
- Hardware: Bolts and brackets rust in salt air, loosening the frame.
- Beams: A beam that sags or has rotted where it sits on a piling.
- Pilings: Wood worn thin near the waterline, or eaten by marine borers below it.
Boards and hardware are quick fixes. Beams and pilings are structural, and worth a closer look before anyone stands on a soft spot.
Why do dock pilings fail in Florida?
Florida Sea Grant explains that marine borers, small animals that tunnel into wood in salt and brackish water, can bring treated lumber that would last 20 to 30 years elsewhere to failure in under 10 years in Florida. The damage is hidden inside the piling, so a post can look fine above the water and be hollow below it.
The same report says plastic or PVC piling wraps suffocate borers already in the wood and keep new ones out. HomeGuide lists wrapping pilings as a reinforcement job at about $250 to $1,400.
Repair or rebuild?
Angi's rule of thumb is the same as for seawalls: when repairs pass about half the price of a new dock, replacing it usually makes more sense. Several failing pilings at once is the usual tipping point.
Florida Statutes 403.813 makes a rebuild simpler if it stays put: replacing a dock within 5 feet of the same spot, and no larger than the old one, is exempt from a state environmental permit. A local building permit is still needed. A bigger or relocated dock is treated as new; see building a new dock.
How much does dock repair cost?
| Repair | Rough cost |
|---|---|
| Typical dock repair | $896–$5,881 (average $3,355) |
| Decking | $4–$55 per sq ft |
| Piling repair or replacement | $200–$1,600 per piling |
| Structural frame | $150–$500 |
| Major structural repairs | Can pass $15,000 |
Labor runs about $75 to $150 an hour in Angi's figures. Storm damage spans the whole range: HomeGuide lists hurricane repairs from about $1,000 to $33,000. See the cost guide for other jobs.
What should I check after a storm?
- Stay off it first: Look from the shore for boards lifted, pilings leaning or the deck out of level.
- Check the connections: Where the dock meets the seawall, and where beams sit on pilings.
- Look at the lift: A boat lift that was loaded during a surge can bend or pull at its pilings.
- Take photos: Before anything is moved, for your records and any insurance claim.
Common questions
Can I replace dock boards myself?
Many people do. Pilings, beams and anything that changes the dock's size or shape are jobs for a marine contractor and need a permit.
Do I need a permit to repair a dock?
Structural repairs need a local building permit; ask your city's building department where it draws the line for small fixes. The state environmental permit is exempt if the dock is rebuilt within 5 feet of the old spot and no larger.
How long does a dock last?
HomeGuide gives a maintained dock 10 to 25 years on average. Wrapped pilings and composite decking stretch that.
